Upside Down Custom Candleholder 2018 Casted Aluminum 305cm (l)
This custom made three-meter-long candleholder with it’s stretched stripes and organic bubbles is reminiscent of physical processes; like a slow-growing coral reef, solidifying lava or dehydrated mud streams.
The proces of the CUSTOM SERIEDS starts by designing a framework in 3D software. The frame is then modeled to scale in wire by hand, before it is hung upside down in an aquarium filled with cold water.
With a syringe filled with hot wax, Smelik “draws” wit the wax around the wire. The process of hot wax coming into contact with cold water is what determines the shape. The structure starts to come alive. The process itself becomes a surprising spectacle that results in every object being unique. The solidified creations are then removed from the water to be digitally scanned.
With 3D software, Smelik can manipulate the arms and legs of the candle holder in such a way to create any desired size – this results in a more contrast-rich object that is 3D printed in a specially developed plastic.
A bronze foundry casts the plastic model with the traditional ‘lost-wax-method’ in solid bronze or aluminum, The CUSTOM SERIES are suited to many lifetimes of use and can be re-polished endlessly
More than 10 years ago, Smelik first began experimenting with this self-developed technique, which he describes as ‘spatial drawing’ in an aquarium filled with water. In recent years, Smelik has developed new designs with this technique. Perfecting the art of creating with hot candle wax in cold water formed the basic principle of the UPSIDE DOWN series
